About the Project
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Betty Mitchell Awards are Calgary’s Oscars for live theatre! This year is Betty's Sweet Sixteen and we could not be more excited.
Theatre in Calgary has been selling out this year like hotcakes, and being sixteen, we sure do love the attention the shows are getting. Did you catch The Kite Runner? Sing along with Charlie Brown? Catch a night at the Opera? Maybe you sat in contemplation with Hamlet, or felt lucky during Sequence. It's a vibrant scene, and we want to spread the word!
The Bettys celebrate and honour outstanding achievement in Calgary’s professional theatre community. The evening will bring together over 300 people to recognize the excellent work that takes place on our stages in Calgary throughout the year by emerging and established artists and companies. The Betty's Sweet Sixteen will reflect the strength of our community and artistic work and inspire us to keep challenging ourselves. Bettys offer recognition to artists that can follow them as they work across the country, as Betty nominations and awards mentioned in artist biographies connect them back to Calgary.
The awards are named after Dr. Betty Mitchell, a pioneer of Calgary’s theatrical community, who was integral to the formation of Calgary’s first professional theatre, Theatre Calgary, and was a cultural leader of Calgary.
