About the Project

Shakespeare is meant to be seen, not read. That’s why The Shakespeare Company has its Page to the Stage Outreach Program that performs Shakespeare at schools around Calgary. We know that Shakespeare can be hard to study when it means staring at words on a page, but when you have a 45 minute fast paced, action packed performance happening right in front of you, it’s hard not to be enthralled and want more. And that’s exactly what we want.

Shakespeare’s plays deal with the intimate and complex issues that high school students get. No need to look any further than Romeo and Juliet for the passion of young love or Hamlet for a world where no one understands you. Giving youth a chance to see Shakespeare can make an immeasurable difference in how they view the world and themselves. A live performance can improve understanding of Shakespeare to improve marks, inspire self reflection, and strengthen the spirit of a school. Our goal for the fall outreach is to reach over 5,000 students.

The Shakespeare Company entertains, educates, and inspires artists and audiences alike through the production of world-class Shakespeare. Entering our 17th season, we use the works of Shakespeare to strike at the heart of what it means to be human in our rawest moments.

In 2012, our mainstage production ofHamletsold out and the outreach shows reached over 4000 students. We want to capitalize on this momentum to reach even more students!

We will be announcing our season in early spring, which will include our outreach show selection. We will update the project to let you know what show has been selected! From there, we will adapt the script, select the creative team, rehearse in early fall, and perform for two weeks in November 2013 in schools across Calgary.
